The Balanced Dog Series, Part 1 of 3: Your Energy, Your Dog - The Impact of Human Energy on Canine Behavior

When it comes to dog training, most people focus on teaching their dogs commands and correcting unwanted behaviors. But there’s a key element often overlooked: your energy. Dogs are incredibly intuitive creatures, capable of picking up on our emotional states in ways that can directly impact their behavior. Whether you’re feeling stressed, nervous, or embarrassed, your dog senses it. At The EveryDay K9, we emphasize the importance of human energy in training, and it’s a major reason why our approach stands out from large franchise training companies.

Let me share a personal story:

My rescue dog, Maui. When I first met Maui at the shelter, she was found on the streets, fending for herself. Despite her rough start, Maui had a calm and gentle demeanor. With training and tools to help her handle stress, she quickly became a well-mannered and marvelous companion. However, Maui absorbs human energy like a sponge, which means I have to constantly be mindful of my own energy around her.

A few years after I adopted Maui, I adopted another dog, Dante, who I’ve written about before. Dante was my heart dog and the inspiration behind starting The EveryDay K9. When Dante passed away, we were all at his favorite place, the beach. I had to leave Maui at the Airbnb while I took Dante away. Maui, who had been anxious in her younger years, but in recent years had never caused a single issue while home alone, reacted in a way I’d never seen before. When I got back, she had ripped up clothing, chewed the door, and destroyed various other items. This was her way of releasing the energy she absorbed from us as we grieved Dante’s passing. That experience drove home the importance of human energy in a dog’s life. Dogs don’t judge by physical attributes or what we say—they judge us and other dogs based on energy.

Let's dive into this a bit more….

Understanding the Impact of Human Energy on Dog Behavior

Dogs are remarkably perceptive creatures, attuned to the emotional states and energies of their human companions. Our moods—whether we’re stressed, nervous, or excited—can significantly influence our dogs' behavior. As renowned dog behaviorist Cesar Millan famously says, "The dog is a reflection of your energy, of your behavior. You have to ask, 'What am I doing?' That's the right question to ask."

When we experience heightened emotions, our dogs often mirror them. If you’re anxious, your dog may become restless or agitated, reflecting the tension you’re unknowingly projecting. On the other hand, maintaining a calm and confident demeanor can help foster a sense of security and balance in your pet.

As Bevill Dog Behavior points out, "By cultivating a calm, positive, and confident energy when interacting with our dogs, we can create an environment of trust, love, and understanding." This principle applies to everything from daily interactions to moments of high stress, like the one I experienced with Maui after Dante’s passing.

The Importance of Boundaries and Leadership

Beyond managing our energy, dogs thrive on boundaries and consistent leadership. They don’t view boundaries as restrictive—instead, they see them as comforting. Structure provides clarity and a sense of purpose, which is why so many dogs flourish when they know what’s expected of them.

Cesar Millan often emphasizes the importance of fulfilling a dog’s needs in the order of exercise, discipline, and affection. When we provide these in balance, we communicate our leadership and create a stable environment for our dogs to thrive. This structure not only helps dogs feel secure but also strengthens the bond between owner and pet.

Dr. Patricia McConnell, in her book The Other End of the Leash, writes: “Dogs are happiest when they know what’s expected of them. Consistency and predictability create trust.” Establishing boundaries is a way to communicate what behaviors are acceptable and what aren’t. This kind of clarity is crucial for building a strong, healthy relationship with your dog.

At The EveryDay K9, we focus on training humans just as much as we train dogs. Large franchise companies often sell one-size-fits-all packages, prioritizing commands and tricks over the emotional connection between owner and dog. But here’s the reality: training humans is the foundation of training dogs. Without addressing how our energy and actions affect our dogs, even the best obedience training will fail to yield lasting change.

The Role of Trainers in Setting Boundaries

Professional trainers use specific techniques to establish boundaries and set the tone for interactions. For example, when meeting a dog for the first time, trainers often avoid direct eye contact, physical touch, or verbal interaction. These practices signal to the dog what kind of behavior is expected, helping to create an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

Such methods demonstrate the importance of non-verbal communication and the energy we project. As I’ve seen with Maui, dogs absorb energy like sponges, which is why it’s essential for us as humans to take responsibility for what we’re putting out into the world.

Training the Human: Why We’re Different

At TED K9, we understand that effective dog training doesn’t end with teaching commands to the dog—it starts with educating the humans. This is where many large franchise dog training companies fall short. By selling standardized, one-size-fits-all packages, they fail to address the unique dynamics between each dog and their owner.

Our approach is different. We provide comprehensive online training modules alongside our hands-on training packages. These modules are the result of tireless work and continuous updates, ensuring dog owners are equipped with the tools they need to succeed.

These modules focus on:

  • Understanding how your energy influences your dog’s behavior.

  • Techniques for setting boundaries and establishing leadership.

  • Real-life scenarios to help you navigate common challenges.

At TED K9, we believe that training humans is just as important as training dogs. When owners understand how to manage their energy, set boundaries, and lead with confidence, their dogs naturally follow suit.

Real-Life Impact of Human Energy (A Client Story)

One of our clients, Sarah, came to us with her Labrador, Rocky. Rocky would jump on everyone who entered the house, and no amount of commands seemed to work. After observing Sarah’s interactions with Rocky, we noticed she became anxious whenever guests arrived, anticipating the jumping behavior. Rocky picked up on this nervous energy and reacted accordingly.

By working with Sarah to remain calm and assertive during these moments, and teaching her how to set boundaries with Rocky, we completely transformed their dynamic. Rocky learned to greet guests politely, and Sarah gained the confidence to lead her dog effectively.
